THE META SELF
The book that dissolves problems in a single reading.
Nina Verkoeyen, Ph.D.
Introduction
There is a version of you that has no problems.
This version does not simply cope with problems better. It has stopped creating them. It wakes up in the morning without anxiety, its relationships do not drown in conflicts, and life does not feel like an endless run over hurdles, one barrier after another.
Most people have never lived from this version of themselves, yet many feel it exists. And if your hands reached for this book, you are one of them. You too carry that feeling: that the life you are living does not reflect what you are truly capable of. That feeling is not an illusion or a fantasy. It is the truest thing in you. And you are about to turn it from a feeling into a life.
The transformation books that fill bookstore shelves all offer the same thing: another technique, another practice to add to the pile. But if those were enough, you would already be where you want to be. This book does something fundamentally different. It does not try to improve the problematic "I". It dissolves it. What remains is the version of you that has no problems.
Your problems have remained unsolved for a reason, and the reason was never a lack of practices, techniques, effort, discipline, or intelligence. Every method humanity has developed for dealing with problems, from therapy and coaching to religion, manifestation, and personal development, tries to solve them from the very same version of you that created them. It is an attempt to improve the false self: to make it more spiritual, richer, and happier.
But a happier false self is still a false self.
It is still rooted in fear, lack, and limitation. This is the "I" most people mistake for themselves. And as long as you live from it, it goes on creating new problems, no matter how many of the old ones you solve.
That is why self-improvement practices so often disappoint. The false self cannot be improved. It can only be dissolved. This is what this book does.
Here you will find no technique to master, no practice to maintain, no steps to follow. Instead, these pages reveal a completely different way of changing your life, one that almost no one has encountered. It is a direct shift in self-identification: from the version of the "I" that creates problems, the Default Self, to the version that simply does not create them, the Meta Self.
And this shift will not happen sometime later. It happens today.
That is not an empty promise; it is a tested result. Every self-help book promises to change your life. Almost none is ever asked to prove it. The Meta Self was tested in a large randomized controlled trial with more than 2,000 participants, in which readers showed measurable psychological shifts immediately after reading it once.
Moving from one version to another does not require years of effort. This is not a practice you must sustain but a shift in your paradigm of perception, in the way you see the world. It only needs to happen once. And this book was built differently, so that the shift happens as you read these pages.
Identity can transform in a single instant, just as a room changes when you turn on the light. Darkness does not need a long time to leave. You simply switch on the light, and the darkness dissolves. This book turns on the light and dissolves the old "I" that created problems. Once identity shifts, the problems it produced dissipate.
The Meta Self is written for those who are tired of the endless succession of problems, tired of trying to improve their lives year after year, tired of the stream of life hacks, spiritual practices, and manifestation techniques that never bring lasting results. It is written for those who are tired of books that inspire them for a week and change little in their actual lives. This time, everything will be different. This may be the last book on transformation you will ever need.
In the study, participants showed dramatic improvement: the weight of perceived problems fell by 63%, vitality rose by 51%, and anxiety dropped by 36%, all in one day, after a single reading. The feeling of being "nervous and stressed" improved by 70%. And the changes did not fade with time. Measured again a week later, and then a month later, what the readers had gained was still there. This stands among the largest trials ever conducted on a self-help book, and among the very few to measure a book's effect on the day it is read.
The paradigm of perception offered in this book works. I have spent decades guiding this shift in thousands of people around the world. This book exists so it can happen to you without me in the room. Turn the page and test it for yourself.
CHAPTER 1
Meta Self
You are tired in a way sleep cannot cure. Tired of a life in which the problems never end, no matter what you do. And you have done a lot: coaching, therapy, meditation, retreats, books. So many books, all of them marked up, studied, applied, and almost none of them changed anything. Perhaps you really did grow. Perhaps you became more conscious, understood yourself more accurately, saw your imperfections more clearly. But the problems themselves remained.
Your relationships repeated the same scenario with different partners. Your financial ceiling moved only enough to remain out of reach. The same resentments, the same emotions, the same fears, the same daily background anxiety. And the vague suspicion that deep down you remained the same person with the same problems. Only now you could see them a little better.
After all those years and all the effort, the conclusion you reached about yourself was wrong. You tried hard enough. Trying harder was never required. It is simply that every method you have ever tried, every practice, every book, including the most brilliant ones, was created to help you cope with problems. None of it was aimed at dissolving the "I" that generates them. And that is the only thing that works.
The problems in your life are not random. Nor are they bad luck or a curse. They are the natural consequence of the way we habitually perceive ourselves and the world. This way of perceiving produces problems as reliably as the hidden mechanism in a Swiss watch. In human beings, this mechanism is called the ego, or the mind, or the small self, or the matrix. Every tradition has its own word. I call it the Default Self. It is our default "I": the self-identification we carry from birth, the one we live from without ever suspecting that another exists. No matter how many problems we solve, the Default Self will create them again and again. The only thing that can change everything is replacing the Default Self with another one.
To understand how this works, you need to see the two layers of reality and recognize which of these layers most people spend their entire lives on, never knowing the other exists.
On the First Layer of Reality, life happens to us. Everything feels predetermined. Relationships start from need and end in conflict. Money never comes easily. Problems accumulate, and when one is solved, another replaces it the next moment.
The person living on this layer, the Default Self, is that tired version of you: always tense, always fighting, always one step behind the life you intended to live.
This is what life looks like when the Default Self is the only identity available to us. When the one who creates this life is still asleep inside it.
But there is another layer of reality.
On that layer lives the version of you that knows life is created by your own hands. Or more precisely, by your perception. When perception is not distorted, events do not become distorted either, and problems are not created. Relationships are built from wholeness rather than from need. The chronic problems of the first layer begin to disperse, the scenarios stop repeating, the anxiety loses its grip, and money stops being a struggle. The "I" that created them is no longer there.
The difference between these two realities is enormous. But it is not found in circumstances, in the amount of effort, or in luck. The difference is identity.
On the Second Layer of Reality lives that other version of you, the one you feel within yourself as your potential and yet cannot seem to begin living in reality.
To begin living it, you must first recognize it. The terms you already know, such as Higher Self, True Self, soul, or inner child, point in its direction. None of them precisely describes the version we are speaking about. So we will give it its own name: the Meta Self.
"Meta" comes from Greek and means "beyond." Beyond your old self. Beyond the boundaries drawn by the mind, by family, by society. Beyond the problems and fears the old self calls its life.
The "I" you identify with is not the deepest one available to you. Beyond the conditioned self, there is the Meta Self, a deeper identity from which life unfolds differently. The Meta Self is not an improved version of your personality, not a more positive mind, and not an imaginary ideal version of you: healed, treated in therapy, improved by years of inner work. It is a fundamentally different self-perception. The Meta Self lives life differently, from another position, and does not create the problems that belong to the "I" you are living from now.
The Default Self is the expression into the world of an identity that does not know what it truly is. The Meta Self is the expression into the world of an identity that knows.
Most people live their entire lives in the Default Self and on the First Layer of Reality. They improve it, arrange it, squeeze the best out of it. They learn to survive in it, but they never leave it.
This book is for the one who cannot do it anymore, because they were never born for it.
It is for you.
CHAPTER 2
The First Correction
Before we begin, I am going to ask something unusual of you. I want you to read this book as if you wrote it.
When we live in the Default Self, we identify only with the ego-mind and perceive ourselves as a separate personality. We see the world through eyes that separate us from other people, that divide everything into inner and outer. We receive all information as if it comes from outside, and this book as if it were written by someone else. Today, we will break this habit.
Receive the words in this book not as my words that have reached you, but as your own words to yourself. They are being born inside you as you read. You are reading a book of your own authorship.
This is a real shift in perception, and it is happening right now. I call it the First Correction. It is the foundation for everything that follows.
The dissolving of problems, and of the Default Self that generates them, has already begun. It began a moment ago, between you and this page. The instant these words started sounding like your own voice, something remarkable was set in motion: the mind's habitual resistance, the part of you that compares, evaluates, agrees, argues, and sorts information into categories, began to dissolve.
As it dissolves, you stop defending yourself against these words and begin to live them, at a level much deeper than the mind. The difference between these two modes of reading is the difference between merely reading a book and living through a real shift in perception. And what you did just now is your first taste of what the Meta Self truly is: a lived meta-position.
The Illusion of Separateness
The Meta Self does not perceive the world as separate from itself. It lives in unity with everything. Reading these words as your own rather than mine may feel strange. Do it anyway. If you hold this meta-position, everything that follows will be perceived by you in a completely new way. And if you learn to live from this position, your whole life will change.
As long as an object, phenomenon, event, or person appears separate from us in our perception, we cannot change it or influence it in any way. How can we change what is separate from us?
Therefore, to begin creating an entirely different life, one without problems, we must unite the outer and the inner, and become one with it all in our perception.
Only when the outer world is inside us, or when we expand to the size of everything, can we influence all of it within ourselves.
This book was written to create a new reality in which the problems you have now do not exist. Because this reality is built from expressing the true version of yourself.
And the First Correction, perceiving this book as your own, is the key change, the first step in building your new life. Other books, courses, retreats, practices, insights, and altered states of consciousness did not substantially change your everyday life because the one attending those courses and retreats was your old self. You learned through the mind and read books through the mind. But the mind, the Default Self, is incapable of transformation. Transformation would require it to dissolve itself completely.
The Default Self, or the mind, is a program. And like any program, it cannot do what it was not designed to do. It can accumulate information, process concepts, and sort insights into categories. But none of that changes its main function. The mind's main function is to maintain itself and the story that you are a small, limited being, separate from everyone and from the outside world. The purpose of the mind is division.
This is what I call the Illusion of Separateness. It is a distorted perception of yourself, of others, and of the world. It is the only real problem that exists. All other problems are only derivatives of it.
No matter how we decorate the Default Self with new practices, books, theories, and knowledge, it will not change what this program is. That is why our mind does not create reality. And with its help, it is impossible to solve most problems in our lives; when we solve one, new problems appear behind it.
Our mind, our Default Self, is the guardian of the illusion that keeps our reality unchanged. And it performs this task regardless of how many years you meditate or how many years you spend in therapy. You can spend decades in therapy or in meditation, read hundreds of books about consciousness and self-transformation, and still feel that something essential is missing.
The part of you that was learning and improving was never capable of learning the most important thing. It is like asking the left hand to become the right. It can imitate, it can pretend, but it cannot become what it is not.
Every teaching you encountered, every insight you received, no matter how liberating, was processed and perceived by that same identity, that same "I," which is incapable of seeing itself differently and has always considered itself separate. This is the ceiling most methods and practices run into.
We break through that ceiling when we begin reading and perceiving this book through the First Correction: from a state of unity with these pages, from the position of being both the author of this book and its reader at the same time. Then the reading and the perception of the material happen not through the mind, but through a larger, whole version of you: the author and creator not only of this book, but of your entire life.
The Octopus Metaphor
To understand what you just stepped into and what you truly are, I want to give you a metaphor. Of everything I have taught over the years, this metaphor is the one that opens the most eyes.
Imagine an enormous octopus. Its head rises above the surface of the ocean, so vast that its edges cannot be seen. Its tentacles reach down into the depths, and each one lives its own life down there, in the underwater world, from its own unique position.
From the point of view of one tentacle, everything looks like this: "I am separate. I see other tentacles around me, and I have no idea that we are connected. They all seem to be independent beings with their own destinies, goals, and problems."
The tentacles spend their lives looking sideways: at the tentacles they love, the tentacles they fear, the tentacles they compare themselves to. Sometimes they look up. Tentacles have always looked up; they have built whole religions out of the sense that something is there. But even looking straight at it, they cannot see it. The head is too vast to fit into a tentacle's narrow angle of perception, the way an eye cannot see something it is standing inside of. So the glimpses become distant gods, higher powers, something sacred and forever separate: anything but the one unthinkable truth, that this immensity is what they themselves are.
And so each tentacle lives from its own limited vantage point instead of from the one head.
The octopus has always known what the tentacles were born not knowing: they are all one being, one awareness.
This is how human beings live. Eight billion tentacles, each one a human life, each certain it is a separate individual, each seeing only what its own narrow vantage point allows. The separateness is real only as experience: every tentacle truly feels separate. But it is a distortion of perception, because they are all parts of one being and always have been.
You are one of the tentacles.
And this book is you, looking up.
The main invitation of this book is to expand your angle of perception and your sense of identity. To know yourself both as the tentacle and as the head, both as the fragment and as the whole. To move from the small, separate "I" that experiences life as something that merely happens to it, the eternal victim of circumstances, into a larger, freer version of yourself that experiences life as its author: the head that recognizes itself as the one who both creates this life and lives it at the same time.
Each of us, in our truest self, is this immeasurable octopus. We are both tentacles and head. The many beneath the water and the one above it. We are whole.
And this is not a belief I am asking you to accept on faith. It is something you will see for yourself when the false version of you, the Default Self, disintegrates, together with the problems it created.
The Default Self, the identity that perceives itself as a separate tentacle, sees itself as small and deprived of real authorship over its life. It looks at the world through the lens of separateness. And through this lens it creates what it sees: a world of struggle, unpredictability, uncertainty, and an enormous number of problems that seem to fall upon it from outside.
This is life on the First Layer of Reality. The life of all the tentacles beneath the water that do not yet know who they truly are.
And when we live in this state, when the illusion of separateness rules us and we perceive ourselves as small and alone, fear becomes our only driving force and the only reasonable response.
Fear is not weakness, not neurosis, and not something that can be fully fixed by therapy or coaching alone. Fear is the very essence of our false self-identification. It is what each of us feels when we believe we are separate from everything, at the mercy of an uncertain world that is indifferent to our existence.
The Default Self lives in this perception. And everything it creates from it carries the imprint of fear. We build relationships out of fear: fear of being alone, fear of not being loved, fear of never receiving the attention and care we need. These are relationships built to manage a state of deficiency rather than to share true love. As a consequence, our relationships are filled with problems.
Financial decisions made from that same deficiency, rather than from free choice, rarely bring us anything of real value.
Chronic anxiety with no specific object or cause also becomes our constant companion. This anxiety has no object because it is the background hum of experiencing ourselves as a small "I" in a vast, unpredictable world. And all negative emotional states, from anger to jealousy to chronic stress, are variations of the same thing. They are how fear feels at different levels of intensity. And fear is nothing other than the Illusion of Separateness as it feels from within.
THE TREE
I want to give you an image that will forever change the way you understand fear.
Imagine a tree suspended in midair. Its roots are exposed and dangling. They have been torn from the soil. Soil is not merely where a tree grows. It is what the tree belongs to. It is the very foundation of its existence.
The tree may still be alive, but it has no support, and every gust of wind becomes a catastrophe. Every change in the weather becomes an enormous threat. The tree does not merely sway; it is thrown from side to side because there is nothing beneath it, nothing holding it, nothing nourishing it, no foundation.
This is what a person looks like when they live on the First Layer of Reality, in the Default Self, and do not know who they truly are.
We are the tree. We belong to the Unity from which we came. This is our soil. This is the healthy foundation of our being. But when we perceive ourselves as separate from this basis, from this foundation, we feel exactly what a suspended tree feels: fear.
Then every thought is wrapped in anxiety. Every decision is wrapped in doubt. All relationships become unstable, and problems accumulate in every aspect of our life, again and again. Because we are a living being, a tree trying to grow without being rooted in the soil to which it belongs.
Yes, you can try to teach the suspended tree not to be afraid, to survive in this suspended state, to adapt, to cope. And it will. But it will never feel whole. For that, it must be returned to the ground. And the moment the roots reconnect with the soil, the moment our identity reconnects with what we truly are, our fear leaves.
The old version of us, the Default Self, dissolves into the larger Meta Self. And all the problems that the old self created begin to dissolve as well.
Weather affects a rooted tree in an entirely different way. It stands differently, it is harder to break, it feels itself differently. As a result, it has fewer problems than a suspended tree.
Fear is what the tree feels when it is hanging in the air. Fear is the absence of knowing who we are. The absence of living the true version of ourselves.
Absence is like darkness, which is not a substance in itself but only the absence of light. Fear is the same: the experience we feel when we have lost contact with our own nature, our own ground. Remove separation, and fear starts dissipating.
The same happens with our problems. Whatever problem pursues us, it is generated by this fear. And fear is generated by the perception of ourselves as separate, by the Default Self.
This is why, in our study of more than 2,000 people, anxiety fell by 36 percent after a single reading of this book and remained at that lower level a month later. The intervention was not aimed at anxiety as such, only at the perception of separateness that produced anxiety. When the perceiver changed, when the Default Self began to dissolve and expand into something larger, the fear that was its natural product began to fade with it.
Our problems are not accidental. They are the result of a particular way of seeing ourselves. And today you have begun to change that way: for the first time in your life, you are reading someone else's book as your own. You are hearing another person's words as an echo of the words you have chosen, right now, to say to yourself.
At this moment, you are already perceiving the world differently than you did yesterday. And you do not yet know how profoundly this shift in perception can change your life, and how many of your problems it can free you from.
How? Let me give you one more image: the architect.
The Architect
Imagine that you are an architect. Creating, building, and designing are your essence, your nature. This is who you are. Every day, automatically and continuously, even without knowing it, you design and construct the structures that make up your life.
Now imagine that on the very first day of your life, someone put a pair of glasses on you. You did not choose them, did not question them. You did not even notice that you were wearing them, because you have worn them since the first moment you opened your eyes. You do not even know what it is like to be without them.
There is one problem: these glasses have the wrong prescription. They bend every line, distort every angle, and every measurement you take will be crooked. And because you have worn them all your life, you do not know that anything is distorted. You think the world is simply this way, that this is what the world looks like, that this is reality.
And so you begin to build. You build the buildings of your relationships, the buildings of your health, the buildings of your career. You build constantly, with total dedication. But every structure, every building comes out crooked and sooner or later falls apart. You are not a bad architect. Your hands are not clumsy. You are talented; you always were. The glasses are the problem.
Whatever you begin to build, the distorted vision distorts. This is exactly how the Default Self builds the scenarios of our lives.
Everything around it looks like crooked buildings: problems appearing again and again, no matter how hard we try or how talented we are.
This distorted vision follows us wherever we go. It is not about the place we are in, not about other people, not about circumstances, not about the economy. When you move to another city, the new buildings are crooked in exactly the same way as the old ones. When one relationship ends and another begins, you see the same structural problems; they appear again in the new walls. When the financial situation improves, the same ceiling rebuilds itself, perhaps slightly higher, but you recognize the pattern.
This is what brought you here, to this book.
All your life you tried to repair the buildings: better materials, different cities, new relationships, improved circumstances. But the architect kept drawing the same crooked blueprints, because the glasses, the paradigm of perception beneath everything, had not changed.
You are here to take off the crooked glasses of the Default Self and see everything through the eyes of who you truly are.
When this happens, and the Meta Self is born, the measurements you take will be accurate. The buildings you begin to construct will be harmonious and beautiful. And the crooked ones will stop appearing.
Every problem you have right now is a crooked building erected by the person who was wearing crooked glasses.
Today you are taking them off. This is how the Meta Self is born. And the only thing necessary for everything to change is to take off the glasses. To shift from the Default Self to the Meta Self.
You don't need practices or special circumstances, and you don't need to wait for the right moment.
Choice is what moves you from one version to the other, from one layer of reality to the other.
Why, then, do we not make this choice? Simply because from birth we have been wearing the glasses, and they distort our vision so completely that this choice cannot even be seen.
In the next chapter, we will look at the distortion that hides it best: the belief that our lives are already written.
A paradigm for ending suffering at the level of identity, tested in four randomized controlled trials.
